Sharp’s New Glasses-free 3D Android Smartphone

LG has the Optimus 3D and HTC has the EVO 3D–both smartphones featuring glasses-free 3D display and 3D image capture. Add to that Sharp’s recently announced glasses-free 3D smartphone, the Sharp Aquos Phone SH8298U. The Sharp Aquos Phone SH8298U has a 4.2-inch glasses-free 3D display with qHD (960×540) resolution. The glasses-free 3D display enables the user to view 3D content without using specialized eyewear. A single-core, 1.4-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor powers Android 2.3 Gingerbread, along with 2 gigabytes of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM. It supports GSM, WCDMA, and HSPA networks. The Aquos Phone SH8298U has a dual-lens, 8-megapixel primary camera capable of high-resolution 3D video and photo capture (720p HD for movie recording, with 3D surround sound). DLNA and HDMI support is built-in, as well, so the Aquos Phone SH8298U can stream hi-definition media from the phone to other capable HD display screens. The resolution rating of the SH8298U’s dual-lens camera is actually better than that of either the LG Optimus 3D or the HTC EVO 3D, which sports only a 5-megapixel, dual-lens primary shooter. microSD and microSDHC (up to 32 GB) expansion slots are also onboard. One potential dissuading feature of the Sharp Aquos Phone SH8298U is its battery rating of 1,240 mAh, which may not look large enough when compared to the HTC EVO 3D’s 1,730-mAh battery or the LG Optimus 3D’s 1,500-mAh battery. According to a Blog of Mobile post, the Aquos Phone SH8298U’s battery has been rated to provide up to 370 hours of standby time on 3G and up to 320 minutes of continuous talk time on 3G. The 3D smartphone comes in bright red and pure white, and is expected to be released on the Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank, according to a Pocketnow report. No indication of bringing the Sharp Aquos Phone SH8298U to Europe or the U.S. has been mentioned yet.
